Most second-language learners can have simple conversations within a relatively short period of time. However, their apparent fluency can often mask a lack of academic command of their second language, that is, the ability to engage with more complex classroom content (Butcher & Ramirez, 2008). Research has shown that even seemingly fluent second-language learners may still possess only 2,000 to 7,000 words in their second language compared to the 10,000 to 100,000 words native speakers possess (Burt, Peyton, & Van Duzer, 2005).  Therefore, building academic vocabulary requires providing opportunities for students to take part in meaningful tasks in which they are required to use their second language.  This workshop will present various teaching strategies and activities that teachers can use in a classroom or remotely to foster engagement and develop student’s oral proficiency.

Léo-James Lévesque est professeur adjoint avec la School of Education de St. Thomas University, à Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, Canada. Il compte plus de 30 années d'enseignement de la langue française dans les programmes d'immersion. Expert en littératie, Léo-James a pour mission de transmettre le goût de lire et d'écrire aux enfants. Il a participé à la conception et à l'élaboration de plusieurs ressources pédagogiques. Il est notamment l'auteur de plusieurs livres de littérature jeunesse. Léo-James a reçu le prix d'excellence André-Obadia de l'Association canadienne des professionnels d'immersion pour sa contribution exceptionnelle à la promotion de l'apprentissage du français au Canada. Léo-James est également lauréat de la Bourse Hilroy de la Fédération des enseignants et enseignantes francophones du Canada pour souligner son innovation pédagogique.


Léo-James Lévesque is an Assistant Professor with the School of Education at St. Thomas University, in Fredericton, New Brunswick.  He has more than 30 years of teaching experience in immersion programs. An expert in literacy, Léo-James's mission is to share his joy of reading and writing to children. He has published several educational resources which are used across Canada. He has authored several children's books. Léo-James received the André-Obadia Award of Excellence from the Canadian Association of Immersion Professionals for his exceptional contribution to the promotion of French learning in Canada. Léo-James is also the recipient of the Hilroy Fellowship Award presented to him by the Federation of Francophone Teachers of Canada to highlight his innovation in education.
