About this learning opportunity

Are you unsure of how to teach narrative writing to your students? Do students have difficulty developing their stories? Do your students’ stories all sound the same? During this session, you will learn how to use plot patterns and appropriate mentor texts to dramatically improve student writing. By providing the structure of a plot pattern, students will become more willing and more confident story writers. We will also explore how to teach related skills such as setting, character, and dialogue by using mentor texts and leveraging the writing process to our best advantage as teachers.

About the facilitator(s)

Karen Filewych has more than twenty years of educational experience as an elementary teacher and school administrator. She is currently the English Language Arts Consultant for Edmonton Catholic Schools. Her passion for literacy began as a young child with nightly bedtime stories and weekly trips to the library. In 2007, she pursued this passion further by completing her Master of Education degree in the area of literacy. Karen's first book - How Do I Get Them to Write? - was published by Pembroke Publishers in May of 2017. Her second book - Freewriting with Purpose - was published in January of 2019. Both books are practical guides for the teaching of writing and include lists of mentor texts for each area of study. Her website,, highlights the power of words and provides teachers with regular book reviews and teaching ideas.
