About this learning opportunity

Do you have reluctant writers in your classroom? Do you wonder how to teach writing and all of the accompanying skills? This session will provide many practical and engaging ways to get students writing across the curriculum. In the morning, learn how to establish a foundation for writing within the classroom, use freewriting as the backbone of your writing program, target specific skills, build a community of writers in your classroom, and use the picture books on your shelves as mentor texts. In the afternoon, we will explore writing as a form of thinking and the ways it can be used effectively in all disciplines of study.

About the facilitator(s)

Karen Filewych has more than twenty years of educational experience as an elementary teacher and school administrator. She is currently the English Language Arts Consultant for Edmonton Catholic Schools. Her passion for literacy began as a young child with nightly bedtime stories and weekly trips to the library. In 2007, she pursued this passion further by completing her Master of Education degree in the area of literacy. Karen's first book - How Do I Get Them to Write? - was published by Pembroke Publishers in May of 2017. Her second book - Freewriting with Purpose - was published in January of 2019. Both books are practical guides for the teaching of writing and include lists of mentor texts for each area of study. Her website,, highlights the power of words and provides teachers with regular book reviews and teaching ideas.
